Love Beyond Romance: Strengthening Other Relationships for Emotional Resilience
By Chase Read, MA, LPCC
During the Valentine’s holiday season, romantic love is often the emphasis. People are pulling the red and pink staple items out of their closets, replaying their favorite RomCom movies, and considering what flowers or restaurants might be at the center of their celebration. It’s important to remember on a day like this that love in all its forms is essential for our emotional well-being. Non-romantic relationships such as those with friends, family, and extended community play a crucial role in fostering resilience. This Valentine’s Day, let’s celebrate all the meaningful connections that support and sustain us.
1. Friendship: The Gift of Chosen Love
Friends provide a unique sense of companionship, support, and encouragement. They are there, not because they feel obligated to be, but because they have determined to be present with you in any circumstance. Prioritizing friendships through regular check-ins and shared experiences helps to strengthen our emotional health. A simple message or some quality time can deepen a sense of closeness and offer stability for all parties.
2. Family: Love with Staying Power
Of course, family can be complicated. The nature of a family’s history inevitably means that both joyful times and devastating times have been shared together. Family, whether biological or chosen, often provides a foundation of love and support. Learning to set healthy boundaries while maintaining connection fosters long-term emotional security. You might consider expressing gratitude to one or two family members of yours to nurture these relationships and assure them that you see and love them.
3. Community: Expanding the Circle
Engaging with a supportive community beyond our immediate sphere of influence builds a sense of belonging and resilience. These communities can include your neighborhood, those with whom you share hobbies or faith traditions. We cannot underestimate the power of connection as we resist loneliness in our current moment. Going out of your way to interact with a stranger, volunteering, or joining a new group are simple ways to embed yourself in a greater community.
