What is Health Psychology? Understanding the Mind-Body Connection

By Dr. Jessica Pae, Psy.D

Health Psychology is a speciality area that focuses on how the biological, social, and psychological factors influence health and illness.  The path to wellness is complicated and the field of health psychology is focused on promoting health as well as the prevention and treatment of disease and illness.  Health psychology explores how multiple factors influence physical health and mental health. Health psychology helps bridge the gap between psychology and medicine and helps people understand how thoughts, emotions and behaviors impact our health outcomes.

Health psychology is rooted in a bio-psycho-social model, which recognizes how all of these factors contribute to health and illness. At Restoration Psychology, we take a bio-psycho-social-spiritual model to help clients incorporate aspects of faith into their treatment.  Unlike traditional models of illness, health psychology considers:
  • Biological factors (genetics, immune function, neurochemistry)
  • Psychological factors (stress, emotions, personality, coping skills)
  • Social factors (relationship, culture, socioeconomic status, health care access)
  • Spiritual (faith, beliefs, rituals, relationship with a higher power)
By examining these components together, health psychologists develop holistic approaches to improving health and well-being.

Health Psychology can help with a variety of presenting problems. Below are a few things Health Psychologists can do:
  1. Help Patients understand Health Behaviors: Health psychologists study why people engage in behaviors that either promote or harm their health. For example, they investigate: why some individuals adopt a health lifestyle and can make lifestyle changes while others struggle with habits such as smoking, poor diet, sedentary behavior. Helping patients learn how motivation, willpower, and self-regulation impact health choice and think through psychological barriers preventing individuals from seeking medical care.
  2. Managing Chronic Illness and Pain: Chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and chronic pain are not just physical issues—they also have significant psychological components. Chronic illness can impact the way one feels emotionally. If stress levels are not managed, chronic illness can get worse. Health psychologists help patients learn health behavior change, cope with the emotional impact of their diagnosis, develop strategies for treatment compliance and overcome barriers, teach skills to help manage stress and pain
  3. Understanding the Impact of Stress on Health: Stress is a major contributor to many health problems. Health psychology studies how chronic stress affects the body, techniques and skills for stress management, and the role of social support to help manage stress
  4. Promoting Health Working with Medical Providers and Treatment Team: Health psychologists work alongside other health care professionals to enhance patient care.
With the rise of lifestyle-related diseases and mental health concerns, health psychology provides valuable insights into prevention and treatment. By understanding the psychological aspects of health, we can develop more effective interventions, improve quality of life, and create a healthier society.

Health psychology is at the heart of the mind-body connection, showing that mental well-being and physical health are deeply intertwined. Whether it’s helping someone quit smoking or other negative health behaviors, manage a chronic illness, or reduce stress, understanding how psychological problems can manifest into physiological problems health psychology plays a crucial role in shaping healthier lives.
