What is Play Therapy and How Can It Help My Child?

By Tyler Martawibawa, LMFT

Play therapy is a type of therapy that uses play as a form of communication and as an intervention. As the Association for Play Therapy simply puts it, “child play therapy is a way of being with the child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping in the “language” of the child – play.”

Does my child need therapy?

It depends! Our guide on how to start therapy can be a helpful place to begin as you consider what exactly you or your child’s needs might be. It is important to remember that the “need” for therapy is more on a scale of 1-10 than yes or no.

How can play therapy help my child?

Therapy gives individuals, couples, and families time and space to process and express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Play therapy is a type of therapy that meets children at their developmental stage by utilizing tools and toys that empower them to process and express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions through play.

How can I help my child?

Along with individual play therapy sessions for your child, parents, family members, and caregivers have a crucial role in supporting your child throughout the process. Your child’s therapist can provide parenting and caregiving support and resources to empower and equip your child’s support system.
