Do I Need Couples Counseling?
By Tyler Martawibawa, LMFT
The thought of needing couples counseling or marriage counseling might feel daunting and scary. It feels like something only couples in crisis, on the verge of divorce, or experiencing an affair might need. But if you’re asking whether you and your partner might need it, there’s a good chance you could benefit from it. There doesn't need to be a specific reason or circumstance bringing you and your partner in for couples therapy. When some couples begin their counseling journey, the reason for therapy is vague and unclear. Your therapist can help you identify patterns and highlight where change can happen for a healthier and more fulfilled relationship.
Couples Counseling is Not Just for Crisis
The reason does not have to be big. Maybe you feel that communication with your partner is tense. Maybe you feel that you have the same argument over and over again. Maybe you feel disconnected, misunderstood, and unheard. These are all reasons that couples therapy could support you. Couples therapy will give you tools and strategies to communicate more effectively. It will help mediate conflict and equip you with the skills to reach resolutions and bring about lasting change. Couples counseling will provide you with a safe time and space to feel heard, foster deeper connection, and make more meaningful understanding with your partner.
Next Steps
While you might be ready to take the leap, your partner might not. Your first step will be to name this desire to your partner. Use “I feel” language and do your best to not blame them for how you feel. Talk with an “abundance mindset” rather than a “scarcity mindset”, for example you could say “I feel that I would like to communicate better/resolve conflict healthier/be more connected/understand you on a deeper level.” Take baby steps together.
