Not a Foreign Concept: Making Therapy Feel Like Home this AAPI Heritage Month
By Dr. Joey Hsiao, Ph.D
As we observe May as the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Appreciation Month, our team has been reflecting on what it means to truly feel seen. While this month celebrates the rich histories and contributions of AAPI communities, it also serves as an important reminder to look inward and care for the mental well-being that sustains us all.
We believe that every person is a nuanced individual. Whether you identify as AAPI or come from a different background entirely, your story is shaped by family, culture, and a unique lived experience.
Mental Health: Nurturing Our Resilience
For many of us, "staying strong" is a way of life—often meaning we carry our burdens quietly to keep moving forward. But resilience isn’t just about the ability to endure alone; it’s also about having a safe space to finally set that weight down. We see mental health as a way to honor your story, giving you the peace and clarity to keep showing up for what matters most.
Therapy Does Not Have to Feel like a Foreign Idea
Western psychology has often focused solely on individual change, which can feel disconnected from lives rooted in family and community. We believe support works best when it feels like it was built for your reality, rather than a foreign concept that asks you to change who you are just to fit in.
- A Collective Lens: We operate with a systemic approach, understanding that your well-being is deeply tied to your relationships and your history.
- Holistic Wellness: Our goal is to help you navigate your mental health in a way that respects your values and your way of being in the world.
Lifting the Weight of "Explaining"
There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from having to educate your provider about your culture or family dynamics before you can even begin to heal.
Culturally responsive care means you don’t have to be a teacher in your own therapy session. We strive to understand the cultural context you live in so that you can stop "translating" your life and start focusing on your growth. We recognize the nuances that make you who you are, allowing for a deeper, more immediate connection.
Language as a Bridge not a Barrier
Fluency in different languages is a profound strength and a source of nuance. We believe your native tongue should be a bridge to deeper understanding, not a hurdle to getting help. To better support our community, our staff currently offers therapy in Mandarin and Korean. We are here to help you navigate your emotions in the language that feels most like home to you.
Community Care as a Support System
We believe that wellness thrives when we are part of something larger than ourselves. Community care is about knowing that your experiences—both the struggles and the joys—are understood by those around you. We would be honored to be a part of your support system, walking alongside you as you navigate the complexities of your identity both within and beyond your heritage. Our team wishes you a thoughtful and restorative AAPI Heritage Appreciation Month. If you have been looking for a space where your background is respected and your story is heard without judgment, we are here for you. We encourage you to reach out and schedule a time to speak with us whenever you feel ready.
